Yanmar 4jh3 DTE oil

Hi I'm doing my first service since purchasing a second hand yacht that has been sailed across the pacific to Aus. The service manual says to replace with 15w40 however the local dealer says SAE30. We currently are in Sydney but we plan to do most of our sailing in the tropics, if we ever get there as we consistently keep having to repair the boat rather than sail it!

Well you can't go wrong using what the manual calls up but plenty of people hare happy to use a 30 grade single weight oil and many say it is better if you don't need the cold weather aspects 15W40 (which you won't if sailing north of Sydney ).

When I had a 2GM20, I only used SAE30.

There is a zquillion oil threads on CF

The manual for my 4jh3 says oil is 'straight 30 or 40 or any multi blend to 40' e.g 15/40, 20/40.

Thanks for your responses I think I'll go with the 15w40 as that is what the engine is used to...I believe....we don't want to create a problem whe e nothing existed!

Agreed - the multigrade 40 I feel the better choice for our climate over the mono 30. In saying that PO of our vessel had run the mono for the first 1700hrs. I just like the lower starting viscocity to allow the oil to circulate- whilst knowing I have the buffer of the 40 when it gets hot or under load.
Cheers

I use Shell 15w40 in the yellow bottle in my 4jh3e every 150 hrs or 12 months whichever happens first. Had to service up Airlie this year after only 7 months due to all the motoring

You will maintain better oil pressure with 30 grade. My experience!
