Re: Yanmar 4JH3E Workshop Manual Required

Has any work been done on the injectors? If the original steel injector washers are replaced with copper then the Teflon heat shields (sleeves) no longer fit on the nozzle correctly and for some reason this can cause grey smoke.... usually at idle. I have no explanation for why this occurs but on 2 occasions ...(in my personal experience, not “ I heard from a guy on the marina”)... on 4JH3E engines. I always suspect the timer but have yet to see one fail.

Re: Yanmar 4JH3E Workshop Manual Required

Hello Peter. Yes, work has been done on the injectors. New nozzles , new steel injectors seats, new protector nozzles have been installed.I now this problem. Protector nozzles have a female conical shape that matches perfectly with nozzle male conical shape, and both have to be squeeze together. Then when you tight the full injector on the cylinder head, you develop a pressure that sealed protector nozzle and nozzles together. Protector nozzle have to be strongly press in conical male nozzle shape before squeezing injector on cylinder head. What would you mean by I always suspect the timer but have yet to see one fail ? Thank you Peter.

Yanmar 4JH3E Workshop Manual Required

You definitely got the heat shield and hard washer assembly correct so there is now a possibility that the nozzles are not correct ..... but I’m not sure how you approach this discussion with a Corsican fuel injection tech...... very diplomatically I’m thinking. The only other plausible cause for grey smoke at 2,000 rpm would be a loss of some compression on one or more cylinders.... no turbo, no aircleaner. Is it possible to do a compression test?
The gear that is attached to the injector pump contains a pair of flyweights an 2 springs and this mechanism advance the timing as rpm increases. This assembly is called the Timer by Yanmar. I always seem to include the auto advance as one of the suspects but so far the timers are all winners ( I now have a good diesel timing light and I can actually see the advance).
Is the smoke very heavy or just a visible light grey mist? How much smoke with no load?

Re: Yanmar 4JH3E Workshop Manual Required

Hello Peter. I bought the nozzles my self and got pressure fixed setting on the injector by a local fuel injector tech that I now since 20 years. I am belgian, not french, no worries. I fixed and installed heat shields, and hard washer myself. They really slide smoothly and perfectly on male nozzles cone, then I tight the injectors at the right torque on cylinder head. Do you mean 2000 rpm load or unload, in port, or on sea water ? Compression test is possible through injectors hole, I must find one. The smoke is not very heavy just visible grey mist. Less with no load.Thank you Peter.

Did your new nozzles conform to these details from the manual. This light grey smoke thing seems to be a 3/4JH3E recurring theme for me, maybe the problem is to do with the european version versus the Japanese???? But I can’t find differences in the nozzle characteristics in the service manual ......but I’m really interested in seeing if you get this resolved.

Yanmar 4JH3E Workshop Manual Required

Hey Paul, the pic failed to come through, is it one of the new nozzles?
Just to be clear......was there any visible exhaust smoke with the old nozzles before the original engine problem?
Pete.

Hi Peter. Yes ,this is one of the new nozzles. Yes, for about one year, I had a light white smoke, mostly visible in the night. Do you think I can increase advance one degree ? Any way to send you pictures ? Quick replay ask http:// , those are messages from the web, mine are my own pictures from Iphone and my screen captures. Y.T.C, Paul.

Paul, see if you can find a thread by “Dockhead” back in 2017 titled Smoky Yanmar. Granted his engine is turbocharged but it sounds like the same problem. I think he eventually gave up on the troubleshooting and accepted the smoke as part of life thereby saving a lot of money on further expensive testing. Dockhead was remarkably thorough.
Pete.
