Yanmar 4JH80 Need secondary alternator

Hello,

I’m looking at a new Yanmar 4JH80 to power my sailboat and I’m being told by the authorized dealer that they do not yet have the ability to put a 2ndary alternator on this engine?? These engines have been out for several years and are presumably utilized in a lot of cruising sailboats. Ideally I was looking to put a high amperage (c. 200amp/hr) balmar alternator to charge my house batteries.

I would very much appreciate any comments or thoughts.

Thank you and regards!

Peter

Re: Yanmar 4JH80 Need secondary alternator

Hi,

Do you mean a DC genset? I considered that but then discarded it. Ideally I want something that will charge the batteries (DC) while the engine is running.

My house battery bank is over 800amp hrs so I’ve been told I need an alternator that is at least 1/4 to 1/3 that size to keep up.

Thanks!

Re: Yanmar 4JH80 Need secondary alternator

Peter,

Do you still need a 4JH80? I have a practically new engine that I will soon put up for sale. By the way, I have two alternators on it - one for the starter battery and one for the house batteries.
