Yanmar 4jhe tachometer issues

Does anyone know what the tachometer on my Yanmar 4jhe takes off from on the engine? It's working intermittently, and I checked for loose connections at the panel. It's working about 1/3 of the time right now.

I am thinking maybe a loose connection on the engine but don't know where to look.

Thanks!

The tach on my 3JH4E is off the back of the alternator

Just for grins, see if it works with no load at all. If it doesn't I hear it's not uncommon. Turn something on and it might work again.

You either have a 2 terminal sender on the bell housing reading flywheel teeth, or a connection to the stator output of the alternator.

Until you figure out which it is, it's hard to diagnose accurately.

My 4JHE does not use the alternator.
I am not sure but think a speed sensing monopole on the bell housing like has been said

Re: Yanmar 4jhe tachometer issues

Makes sense if it's on bell housing, especially since I removed transmission for rebuild this winter so probably loosened a connection on reinstall
Thanks everyone!

Re: Yanmar 4jhe tachometer issues

Sounds familiar, I had a similar problem and discovered a loose wire connection on the wire from the back of the alternator to the Balmar MC 614 regulator. 90% of all electrical problems are a result of poor connections.

Ahhh, don't forget that the alternator will stop feeding the tach when the solar panels have charged the batteries enough to shut down the alternator.
I was suprized after my first solar panel install.

Re: Yanmar 4jhe tachometer issues

Found this old thread that has photos of a tach sensor on the bell housing as used on the GM series also.

Re: Yanmar 4jhe tachometer issues

Thanks everyone. It's a sensor on bell housing right above starter on 4jhe. Took off connectors, sprayed terminals, put back on- all fixed!!

Re: Yanmar 4jhe tachometer issues

Loose connections is by far the most common issue on those senders.

Re: Yanmar 4jhe tachometer issues

I will make this the first post I have made on this site. The above thread pointed me in the right direction and helped me find the loose/corroded connections on the sender. Thanks!
