Year of engine. Do you know yours?

Kind of an odd item. I'm talking to a guy/gal about their sailboat. They have the make and can give me a guess on the hours, but, they can't give me the year? Shouldn't you be able to find that out? Especially when you are getting parts? It's a Yanmar. But.. I'm a newbie, school me.

Some engine labels indicate date of manufacture, some don’t - Yanmar varies.
Some Serial Numbers indicate date of manufacture, some don’t (including Yanmar).

Yanmar sure seems proud of their "performance level". Ranges from "high" through "super" to "great" with a couple of stops along the way. No dogs in that fleet!
