ZF 25M w/ Beta 62 - Heavy vibrations and engine shakes in reverse.

I've done shifting manually right at the transmission, shifting felt smooth to forward, neutral, reverse and back.

Fluid levels are good.

A week ago we were grounded in a storm, after kedging we got off and used the engine for propulsion. A line was left in the water and fouled the prop in high reverse. We got the line off the prop and it's seems that either right after or shortly after we had reverse issues.

Starting the engine in neutral goes as it always did, smooth. Forward works well (we've got 2hrs of forward on the engine/transmission since). Shifting to reverse makes for quite a lot of noise and the engine shakes pretty good (bad).

I've confirmed that the shaft is turning when in reverse, but even in idle reverse it's bad enough where I want to shut it down.

I've heard it could be worn clutches plates.

Oil samples on survey 3 months ago showed high metal content of the same type the clutch was made of.

I almost ordered a new transmission today but thought I'd look a little deeper. Running out of options and we're tight for time. We'd happily order a new trabsnission if I knew that was the problem but figured I'd ask around first.

Any suggestions?

Make sure that the propeller is fastened tightly to the shaft!
It will push into proper position in forward, but get real sloppy in reverse if the nut is loose.

I understand this is a folding prop ? Are you sure that the prop opens well on all blades when in reverse ? In reverse a folding prop is subject to water flow tending to shut the blades, this may explain the difference between no vibration in forward and strong vibration in reverse.
Some folding props do not have gears or have broken gears, if that is the case one of the blades might not open completely, causing strong unbalance

Ditto on the posts above. Plus, the problem is muxh more likely to reside at the prop than at the transmission. It could also be caused by debris jammed in front of the prop from the over-run rope. fSuch problems can be difficult to detect or cure by diving, and putting the engine in gear with a diver down significantly reduces the life expectancies of divers. In all likelihood itis time to haul the boat, disassemble the prop, and straighten everything out. The damage will be pretty obvious once you get there.
