Zincs on Yanmar 20 HP

I bought an old boat with a new engine. Engine was installed approx. 3 years ago and how has approx. 200 hours.

It is a Yanmar 3YM20. 20HP. SerNum E00447

I am concerned about zinc sacrificial anodes!

I have downloaded the shop manual and can find no mention of zincs I have asked local folks and I get both yes I have them and no I don't.

One respected source has a similar engine and says-- no zincs on engine but the heat exchanger may have zincs.

So answers run the full gamut---

So can anyone with a Yanmar please comment??

Thanks a lot--- Rick

Re: Zincs on Yanmar 20 HP

Older yanmar QM 70's- earily 80's engines had a zinc even for fresh water cooled. But fresh water cooled yanmars from the newer 80's and 90's GM series up don't have a zinc in the engine. Raw water cooled engines would have one.

So short answer, you don't have a zinc in the engine.

Yes--- I just heard back from a Yanmar rep and he agrees---- there are no zincs in the engine OR its heat exchanger, for this model engine.

I am now waiting to hear from the maker of the muffler (Vernalift) to verify there is no zinc in it.

Thanks a lot!

Yanmar uses Monel instead of copper in their heat exchangers. Claim the very noble cupra nickel Monel doesn't need zincs.
