10mm chain + GALVANIZING.... will it jam?

The gypsy on the winch for the old (unknown diam) chain jams the new 10mm chain (the links are too wide). It wraps arond the gysy and chews up, breaks of anything in its path like the stripper.
The spindle is also bent so time for a new gypsy.

I am afraid that the galvanizing on the 10mm chain will cause similar problems on the new windlass.

The chain meaurements are:
link thinkcness 1mm near as dammit
ID of a link 28mm
OD length of a link 48.5 - 49 mm
OD width of a link 38mm

I am not clear how windlass gypsies are toleranced???

Re: 10mm chain + GALVANIZING.... will it jam?

No, galvanizing will NOT impact the gypsy’s performance.

The problems you have were because the gypsy was not the proper size for your new chain. You say your chain is “10mm” without other information is is hard to know… is it BBB, G4, HT, something else? If you do not know and are buying a new windlass, your best solution is to take a foot a chain with you when you are picking a Gypsy and see if it fits.

There is NO tolerance for a gypsy that is not made for the chain size and type you are using. It has to match. But the thickness of galvanizing is not an issue. There are a few sizes that are close enough together that a single gypsy can handle both, (some kinds of 3/8” and 10mm, for example) but that is how they are labeled.

Yes, one time we went to a shop where they had about 16 gypsies, all for 10 mm chain, and all slightly different. You're stuck out of luck without a piece of your chain.

However, as to re-galvanizing chain, be sure the place you take it to also shakes the chain. If it doesn't, what you get back is a lump of galvanized chain that you have to break up with a sledge hammer. No worries, though, the galvanize will slowly creep back over the chipped places, and cover the chain. Think months, not days.

Aaaargh this is what I was afraid of.
As a practical matter, this windlass has to be ordered over the internet. There is nothing around that will work.

I have measured the chain ID and OD both length and width and sent it to the online vendors, but not heard back. Im guessing they are clueless about these matters also.

Well now im totally stumped.

How am I supposed to figure out what will work when online vendors list one 10mm gypsy?
