1970 Owens Refit

We acquired beautiful 35’ Owens Concorde just over a year ago. Until then we were boaters but on the much smaller scale. We have an 18’ Starcraft. This whole process is new to us and here’s some of our progress as we stumble along. Any ideas or suggestions are welcome. Most everything needs repair or replacement lots to learn. We have multiple projects underway at the same time. We work the bottom when the weather and winds are good. Some of the other things underway right now are the aft deck, the running gear, bits and pieces of windows and railings. The engines are in good shape!! Wwoot! I’ll try to make separate posts for different sections of the rework of this piece of Chesapeake history with pictures.

Here’s some pics as we discover what we are actually getting into!

Aft deck

We already cut out the aft deck. It was unstable. We just cut some plywood to fit so we can safely walk on it until we can rebuild the framing under the deck.

Stanchions and general water intrusion problems

I can’t understand the idea behind this installation. I’m not certain what to search for to get an understanding as most results come back with the standard above deck installations. The stanchions go 2” below deck and are beefier on that lower portion. We removed them and cut the lower section off. We will be reinstalling with the typical set screw rectangular bases after repairing the holes.

Sinking the end of the stanchion 2" into a pocket in the deck, right at the hull/deck joint, is one of the strongest ways to install stanchions. Expensive oceangoing boats do it this way. It is NOT going to rip out if someone is tossed against it. It also makes installing the stanchions easier because they don’t need reinforcing feet welded to the bases, and plates and screws (that leak and pull out) to support them against the leverage of the lifelines. You may want to re-think your approach.

Re: 1970 Owens Refit

My dad had a 35 Concorde Sedan in the 80's that was pretty nice.

Looks like your's is the express but I know there is a 35 sedan (possibly my dad's) in Maryland Marina in Middle River that looks pretty good. If you needed to see how Concorde did some things you might be able to reach out. Took a picture of it earlier to trip the memory banks.

Good luck on your projects...

Jeff

How do they keep the water out? These stanchions were causing a lot of water to come into the boat. Also what held them in place? There was no support under the stanchions and nothing keeping them above deck except the lifeline and the set screws on the railings. Do you happen to know what I could use for search terms to get more information? Thanks for sharing, we have googled and asked people and no one had a clue!

That’s awesome! We will certainly love to look at it if we get up that way. If you have more pics we would love to see them too! I’m gonna see if I can find some adverts that list the boats to figure out which is which. It would be cool to truly know what it is supposed to be.
