1979 Cheoy Lee rudder removal

Do any of you folks know how to go about removing a Cheoy Lee’s rudder? I started poking around at it today but still have no real idea where to start.

Once I unbolt that post does that shaft drop down through the skeg or slide up through the cock pit? Can’t see any obvious way to remove what I believe they call the pintle on the bottom of skeg,I can take and post more pics tomorrow if needed.

Re: 1979 Cheoy Lee rudder removal

My friend has a CL 30 but I am not sure how well it matches. Wheel steering or tiller? More pictures help for sure. I wonder if there is enough room to lift it up out of the pintle at the bottom of the skeg. You may have to remove the pintle, I don't know, but are you sure you have to remove the rudder?
BTW seems like a really nice design!

Re: 1979 Cheoy Lee rudder removal

Thanks, been a great boat if you scroll up and secs pic posted by coopec43 that is my boat and rudder is completely folded in half, so unfortunately I need to get it off of there. Haven’t figured out how to attach pics to post or replies yet so I included some in my albums, might have to do the same tomorrow, but if you could an eye out for those and and have any advice I would really appreciate it. I have plenty of glass work to do on my keel but would like to get rudder off as soon as possible so can start working on that back at my shop

Maybe contact the

https://www.cheoyleeassociation.com

This should be relatively straightforward job, given the fact that the rudder stock ... articles on your site, has held up beautifully and will require only minor repair. ... Does anyone out there have a newer 36 (Clipper Ketch) or a higher Sail No.

Thanks coopec, I am a member of the association and have ousted there also but they don’t quite have the traffic this place does. I just reached out to that other user who had a similar issue so thanks for the link

Re: 1979 Cheoy Lee rudder removal

My '88 Pedrick CL had a skeg mounted rudder that I pulled off. Wheel steering so I had to disconnect the rudder arm, then the bottom bracket on the skeg and the rudder came out. I was hauled on dirt, so had to dig a hole to get enough depth. Not sure what your configuration is.

That sounds about right so that bracket on the bottom wasn’t secured on with any kind of bolt? If you don’t mind I’ll take some pics today could really use some affirmation I’m heading in the right direction.

Re: 1979 Cheoy Lee rudder removal

If I remember correctly, the bottom bracket was a plate bolted onto the skeg and acting as a pintle.

Gotcha, guess I’m gonna have to get in there and scrape a little harder. Just can’t seem to find any kinda bolt, but common sense says it’s there somewhere.

Re: 1979 Cheoy Lee rudder removal

Had a good day today, got quite a bit of work done. A couple of the boat geniuses in the yard were pretty helpful with suggestions and I managed to get the pintle off. I’ll continue following up with updates there’s nothing I hate more than finding a thread that’s relevant to an issue I’m working on and the person that’s posting never follows up with a solution. Still have no clue how to post pictures on here, I guess I must be a **** detective when it comes to computers :-)
