At the end I installed a second hand mast nearly identical in height to the old one. Quite happy with the result, but it was hard work. It took me nearly nine months (due to full time work commitments, lack of proper finance, and chain of events that would fill a book) to mix and match various new and used fittings. At the same time I realized how good quality the old mast was, eg. it was tapered at both ends, which I've never seen before.
The new mast still needs an inner stay, then I can set a proper pre-bend and we're ready for the new sails.
