Adding Second Boot Stripe Over Bottom Paint

The previous owner painted the boot stripe about 6" above the waterline. Even with us fully loaded, we are still at 4". The bottom and hull are currently white (Micron Extra) and Awlgrip. The boot stripe is black. We want to change bottom paint to a black bottom paint. I want to paint a 3/4" white stripe below the boot stripe to give the transition contrast. I really do not want to remove all the bottom paint from below the boot stripe to paint a second white separator stripe. Can I simply scuff sand the upper bottom paint and lay on a new boot stripe? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Adding Second Boot Stripe Over Bottom Paint

There really is no way to paint over the bottom paint, it will need to be removed. However, Pettit makes a white bottom paint in the Vivid. So maybe using this will solve your problem until you can strip it in the future. Chuck

Re: Adding Second Boot Stripe Over Bottom Paint

Thanks Chuck, We want to apply a higher copper content paint to deal with the increased fouling of the tropics and for that, we will have to use a traditional color (black, blue, red). We are planning to apply Blue Water Copper Pro SCX in black. I guess we are going to have to sand down to the epoxy
