Advice on replacing Acrylic in Lewmar Hatch

Getting to the short strokes acrylic replacement but have a question or two.

Picture # 1 shows the hatch frame ready for acylic. I will be putting down a double thickness of butyl tape as the lip from the hatch seal extends upward. I have put small pieces of tape on hatch to showthis.

In picture #2 I have placed the acrylic in frame. Question - should I remove the butyl tape that will extend out from under the acylic? The reason I am consedering doing this is that I want the sealant to make as much contact with the acrylic and hatch frame as possible.

Am I being to anal (again)?
