Affixing Underwater Lights + Induction Lights

The Admiral wants a couple of underwater lights so she can see the kids if the fall in at night.

I did see ages ago some that worked on induction with no holes through the hull, but I can not find any now - If anyone has any links it would be appreciated.

My local chandlery who only has the wired thru-hull versions told me to simply stick them on, rather than screw them to the hull.

Is this good advice? If so what is the best thing to stick them with and what sort of prep should I undertake?

Greetings Alien. Your wife has very real concerns although I honestly think that’s a strange statement. To drill holes in your boat and mount U/W lights to run continuously at anchor in case a kid falls in.

Perhaps think about lights to hang overboard, perhaps rechargeable LEDs, and string safety netting in your handrails like sailboats do.

Otherwise 2 or 3 years from now your kids will be old enough not to fall in but you’d still have a bunch of holes in your hull.

Well it is the wife - "Ours not to reason why, ours but to do and die" (well less of the dying) - But hence the previous line about Induction lights.

Lash the kids to the deck and stop worrying...

The underwater lights provide hours of satisfaction.

Use the Propspeed Lightspeed on the glass and housing for easy cleaning.

Unfortunately underwater lights attract small baitfish that in tern attracts larger fish like Tarpon. The Fish and Game has done extensive studies and found this dramatically altered the hunting habits of these larger fish and negative impact on local eco systems. Besides if someone falls overboard at night above water flood and spot lights are what you need not underwater hull illumination

Best answer here, I believe. Could be anything from good rechargeable flashlights close to hand in the cockpit, to dedicated lights on the spreader that illuminate the water to either side and astern.

Sailors don't do such things. You can install good flood lights from the mast, arch etc. or use portable clamped USB charged LED lights from the railing when not sailing.

Did this on a tri-toon boat once. we used pond lights and a dc to ac inverter. multi-color with a remote for changes. we affixed to the aluminum hulls using 5200. they stayed on even at 40+mph. They were mounted on the stern.

... but did you have to drill holes thru the hull?

Re: Affixing Underwater Lights + Induction Lights

Our Lord walked on water w/o getting his toes wet, so he had no need for underwater lighting.

Re: Affixing Underwater Lights + Induction Lights

Put water activated lights on the kids' automatically inflating preservers. If they fall in the preservers will inflate and safeguard them and their light will enable you to spot them promptly. Be sure they have a whistle also attached to their preservers.

Standard equipment to be worn by everyone on board for the duration they ever go topside.
