Aluminum Mast Maintenance??

I have my mast down to replace standing rigging, so want to be sure that I don't miss anything while it's down and I can walk around it.

1) Should I apply something to the mast to maintain the finish?? One sailor told me to wipe down the exterior finish with oil. Doesn't sound like that would be good for mast climbing??

2) Should I apply something to the halyard pulley wheels in the top of the mast??

Getting ready to re-step the mast, so do you have any advise before I re-step it??http://www.cruisersforum.com/images/...s/confused.gif
