Re: Aluminum primer and etcher in one

What ever primer you pick, do yourself a favor and buy a can of the Awlgrip Max Cor CF spray. Inevitability you'll sand through and expose aluminum at some point. Instead of a ruined day, this spray allows you to just hit the spot with primer and keep on going.

We used Pettit Alumaprotect for most of our hull and it has stuck well. But it's just a base primer and the next layer of Pettit primer (I can't remember the name) was junk- horrible to sand and had adhesion issues. We switched to two coats of Pettit Alumaprotect, three coats of Awlgrip primer (mostly 545) and then three coats of Awlgrip topcoat. This has been successful.

We also used just Interlux Interprotect 2000 (4 coats) under areas that we're coated with non-skid and these have held up even better than the Alumaprotect. Below the waterline was a completely different process.

By no means are we competent painters with much experience, so I give no advice except that I'd get the Awlgrip Max cor spray right away.

Matt
