Don’t know your project or capabilities

Professionals use the awlgrip system

The highest quality etch primer is Max Cor

This is a spray only paint

The next level down is Hull guard

This is a high quality substrate primer that can be applied brush Roller

Google Awlgrip and pull up the paint MDS and application procedure

The reason spray only is best for primer is that it avoid impurities

With hull guard the first coat must be applied with a brush , not roller

Rough sharp edge raw aluminum picks up pieces of the roller , this roller residue acts like a wick when the paint dries and promotes moisture intrusion

Try and PM funjohnson, they did a full refit/paint to their aluminum pilothouse sailboat, the resulting pictures are beautiful.

Re: Aluminum primer and etcher in one

Confused are the above primers a combo primer and etcher?
I’m not looking for just a primer.

Alodine wash will work

It’s messy and prone to error
Normally I use alodine only on surfaces that can’t be correctly prepared

Re: Aluminum primer and etcher in one

Petit paints have Aluma protect that they describe as.....

Strontium Chromate Aluminum Epoxy Primer. Easy to Mix and Apply; Epoxy Primer for Aluminum; Strontium Chromate for Maximum Corrosion Control

YMMV

Interesting product..... however it would be nice if they could be consistent in their instructions that say "for above and below waterline" and "do not use below waterline"...... I'm confused.... LOL

I agree, that’s pretty stupid. Now I can’t get this out of my head and need to know what it is... even though I will never use it below the waterline

I have contacted Awlgrip and they confirmed it is for above water only:
Quote:
Hi Nick, wash primer CF is only for above water line application. Attached are the TDS and the users description of wash primer, it does not state below waterline in our TDS or users description. If you have any questions on this or any other Awlgrip products please call our Technical support line at 888-355-3090.
