Re: anchor question

That anchor is overkill for a Cal 20...which will give you some peace of mind while away from the boat regardless of if it is perfect for the bottom type or not. Just make sure you put out enough scope with some chain as well.

Do you have good luck with the Bruce/claw anchors? There seem to be quite a few of those for sale on my local cl and fb marketplace.
Despite the poor results in some anchoring tests I think a Bruce is a good anchor and works well in most situations. We have used a 44lb Bruce on our 43ft boat for 25 years and it has held everywhere except where large rocks or stones are present.

Re: anchor question

I think the Delta is a much better anchor than a CQR, but doesn’t rate against one of the new gens. So middle of the road?

Re: anchor question

I think I'd go with a bruce or cqr over a delta. Both are probably easily found at marine consignment or on craigslist.

Re: anchor question

We replaced our rusted Rocna with a stainless Hamburger delta type anchor so the glare will blind oncoming sports fishing monsters intent on playing chicken in the channel. Our Bruce serves as an excellent grapple hook for pulling Lilly pad rafts out to clear channels in Louisiana thus keeping the Green Frog population under control.
Different anchors for different sailors.

Re: anchor question

I figured there would be about as many different answers as people answering, but it sounds like a used cqr or Bruce might be the way to go in my price range. There are a couple cqr anchors on my local Craigslist for 75 and 180 dollars, so it might be worth trying.

Re: anchor question

I'm still using my 20 lb CQR here in the Bay but have the 25 lb Mantus M1 New Gen assembled and ready to go

Have used the CQR though for the past 11 years

Do you have a good liability policy on your boat?

I'm not sure if that's a rhetorical question, but in case it isn't, I will once the boat goes in the water.

The only anchorage I know of in Venice is right of the yacht club and a large marine patrol presence, not the place I would want to worry about dragging without some good insurance to cover a possible collision.

But there are folks out there, myself included, while as much as we respect the tests that SV Panope has done, we don't entirely think his results should dictate what anchor we use.

As for me, I don't know how to reconcile my own 35 years of anchoring experience with these tests, since my results don't match up with his. And I am sorry, I not a sheep, nor do I think others should be.

So I'll go my own way.

Re: anchor question

A 35-pound Delta on a 20-foot boat?

It's not going anywhere unless there is no scope or it lands with the point in a tin can. The Delta is not up with the new kids, but come on guys, we used them for decades and decades, and that over sized, he's good.

Chief among those folks would be me.

I am genuinely interested is all experiences with anchors. Please give us detailed examples of yours not matching mine so that I might learn even more.
