Any advice on painting/staining vinyl

Someone has offered some nearly new, very nice cushions upholstered in vinyl but in a really ugly color. Does anyone have any experience with painting or staining vinyl? The vinyl has firm padding behind it, and feels tough but flexible, with a slight leatherette texture. Cushions will not be out in the sun much. I have seen some ads online about painting this sort of material, but hate to have an experiment fail, so if anyone has experience with a good product it would be a great help. Thanks!

You can proceed with reasonable assurance that you are not going to destroy the vinyl. People repaint the upholstery in their cars, so You're not out on a limb. Try these:
