This is the crank for my 1981 Yanmar 3GM20. Impossible to crank it backwards.

I have not tried starting it with the crank...yet. I will try next year. In the meantime, I use it to spin the engine every time I visit while on the hard.

And the hand crank looks nothing like the OP's pic.
Although some time has past, I finally remembered to get a photo of my crank. I originally thought Yanmar introduced this crank with the YSE but it since I found that it was supplied first with the YSM (a later engine than the YSE). As previously posted, the YSM uses a dedicated starting shaft for hand staring while the earlier YSE using an external chain drive on the front PTO shaft.

The end result is while the crankshaft routes the same in both engines (CCW), the YSE requires CW rotation of the starting handle and the YSM require CCW rotation of the starting handle.

This handle has been repainted (obviously ).

Re: Anyone know what this handle is made to crank?

I also notice while the casting is somewhat different to the OP's photo, the cogs are of the same arrangement.

On my hand crank for a Volvo, the cogs are set to release if the engine starts when cranking, as seems to be the case in this picture, so I don't understand how it could can work in both directions, CW and CCW.

Re: Anyone know what this handle is made to crank?

I used to start my Atomic 4 by hand fairly often. There were two failure modes when hand cranking that are worth paying attention to.
One is when the bore of the crank and the shaft it fits over are crudded up and inadequately greased. I once had the engine start and rev to a few thousand RPM with the crank stuck on. Rather than climb over spinning death I went out through the forward hatch and shut the engine down. I greased it and restarted. Scary.
The other I haven’t experienced myself. I was taught that when cranking you should keep your thumb tucked away against your hand so if the scenario above happens the crank handle doesn’t break your thumb.

For my gas engine it was a few turns with ignition off to draw in fuel and then stop on a cylinders upstroke. A big heave and MAGIC.

If you look carefully at the OP's photo and also mine, you will see there are 4 cogs (or ears) on the handle. Two are set for CW operation and two are set for CCW operation. Depending on which direction you need, you use the appropriate set of cogs.
