Anyone know what this handle is made to crank?

Not sure this is the right forum, but I'm prepared to be overruled.

Found this in the bowels of my boat. Crank handle of some sort. Can anyone identify?

On my last boat my little yanmar had a crank like that to turn it over if you wanted to start it by hand.

very very old gasoline engines.

the receptor is in the front of the engines.
Most of the time (all) it was part of the crankshaft that extended further out.

Have not seen nor used one since the early 60s.

Yeah, it sure looks a lot like that, but my Yanmar crank only had two cogs.

I don’t think it’s an engine crank, to begin with nothing would hold it engaged. Old Fords that I have hand started had cranks that as you tuned them, they actually got pulled into the crankshaft, when the crankshaft overran the crank handle they were pushed apart.
I’d guess some king of windlass and the crank arm had to be thru bolted to hold it engaged.

Maybe...

Look at how it beveled to actually back/screw off when the engine starts.

Re: Anyone know what this handle is made to crank?

I have one that is used to start a Yanmar YSE.

My Yanmar 2GM20 crank only has two dogs.

If you look carefully you might find the four dog version is designed to crank both ways - CW & CCW. My 4 dog one has one pair for CW and the other pair for CCW. I can't quite tell from you photos but it seems to be exactly the same.

It’s beveled the same in both directions though.

One pair are but the other pair appear to be bevelled one way with a different shape to one side.

I used to have a crank similar to that for an atomic 4. Used it for real a few times. Got stuck in the crankshaft once when the engine kicked over. Scary. If anyone uses a hand star make sure the whole thing is greased well ennough.

One pair has almost vertical (90 deg) sides and the other pair has both bevelled sides at ~ 45 deg. Thus it can be used for a CW or CCW cranking and still throw out when crankshaft speed exceeds crank handle speed.

A little hard for these old eyes to distinguish but that is what I am seeing as well.

Soon as you sell it or get rid of it you know what happens...........right?

I keep finding odd devices on my 35 year old boat. Eventually the veil is lifted and a shining beam of light illuminates that wierd part just when I need it most.
