Re: Apitong aka Keruing Lumber for structural repairs

I have a 4" X 4" Apitong Compression post that I used on my Ferro cement boat about 28 Years ago. It's worked fine and looks as good today as when it was installed. I had a furniture factory, one of my machines was a great big industrial 30" inch planner, The Apitong was very rough and I wanted a smooth finish, I couldn't believe how hard that wood is, that planner sounded like a machine gun... just taking a skim cut on all four sides ate the blades. I had to send them out for sharpening and finished the job with a belt sander.

Re: Apitong aka Keruing Lumber for structural repairs

I got a tip from a doormaker that has served me well. when gluing oily woods like teak, ippe, and Apitong wipe the surfaces to be glued with a clean rag that is damp with alcohol and wait about 15min. before applying the glue. It removes the surface oil and works well with epoxy.
