Auxiliary fuel pump needed?

I have a Westerbeke 3.8 DDT generator and it is not getting fuel. Tank has fuel and filters are okay, engine will start but stops after a short time as it seems to me its starving for fuel. I suspect the fuel pump is bad. New pump is $362.
Can I just hookup a electric pump to solve the problem and how would I do it?
Can it just be an inline pump or do I need to bypass the generators stock pump.
What capacity would the pump need to be? Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated. Here is hoping to save some money.

Re: Auxiliary fuel pump needed?

Yes you can just buy a small diaphragm style electric fuel pump and install in in line before the original fuel pump. Just make sure that it approved for diesel fuel. No need to remove the current pump unless it's leaking. One last thing. Buy it from an auto parts store. Not necessary to buy from a marine outlet.
