Bayfield

Herreshoffs' design calls for a mizzen mast. It has been removed so isn't that going to have a big effect?

Re: Diddikai

I don't know why Bayfield popped up

I bought a Herreshoff Diddikaii 39 sailboat. The Mizzan mast was removed. I wonder what that does to sailing? The Mizzan was in the original design? I'm thinking about replacing it so I'm hoping that someone out there can tell me.

Thanks
Frank

Re: Bayfield

The design criteria was best satisfied as designed by the renowned naval architect L. Francis Herreshoff. I would rely on the designer and return it to his specifications.

Re: Bayfield

While I have great admiration for all the Herreschoff clan, in your place I'd give sailing the boat as is for a while, and see if it meets your requirements. A lot of folks that I see sailing in ketches don't use the mizzen at all... some have removed the boom entirely, and seem happy with the result.

If you then decide to replace the mast and rigging, you will have a standard of performance to compare with... and that might show you why others don't use the mizzen!

Re: Bayfield

Like Jim says, depends on the ketch. On ours, beating without the mizzen creates lee helm. So badly in fact that in light air the bow cannot be brought up until it has fallen off and speed generated.
However if the main mast was placed in a position that is balanced, the mizzen may have only been added as a vestigial rule bearer. Therefore unnecessary.
