Bent Spreader, how to find a replacement?

The Spreader is airfoil shaped its dimensions in inches are

0.654Hx2.258Wx33.5L wall thickness 0.75



I found some spreaders on RigRite,com but they aren't the same size. Should I use them or keep looking. Where should I look?

I would call Ballenger Spars in Watsonville California. I found them to be a great business, super knowledgeable and super helpful. Even if just over the phone, I bet you’ll get all your answers.

Tom, that wall thickness seems unrealistic... perhaps a typo?

And I too wonder what boat? Is it t he Potter? If so, can you contact the builder?

My potter has no spreaders thank the lord.

I made all the measurements with a dial caliper.



The spreader is on my Nimble Artic. The builder has died and the company was in receivership, the new owner has no access to the old design documents.



I built a model of the Kenyon spars SP 3 which is just a little larger than the bent spreader.


It seems if I use that one I'll need to shim it some how to fit.

If all else fails, I think a good TIG welder could work on that, straighten, weld and repair it. Spreaders are mostly in compression so the heat treat softening around the weld wont likely matter.
It's a small boat and the other option is just to buy a set of spreaders and bases and replace what you have.

That's more like it, Tom! Couldn't see how the wall thickness could be greater than the overall height!

It has a bit of corrosion. I'd consider replacing the pair with a similar, if not larger, section available from RigRite.. or perhaps find used ones on ebay or a salvage web page (Donsmarinesalvage, nandjmarine.com, Bacon Marine, etc). Looks too far gone for a repair IMO.
