Re: Big boat haul out

$15k or so for a 120’ sounds very scary to me.

Try Gloucester Marine Railways and Fairhaven Marine in MA. Both serve the fishing fleets.

In what regard? Too much?

From the conversations I have had with boatyards, it's not really the length that is an issue, it's the weight.

You said it was close to the price of the boat. A $15kish 120’ boat sounds like a massive liability.

Re: Big boat haul out

Ah, I see. Yes, what I meant was the cost of the full haulout, including the scraping and bottom paint.

Even with that said, you are correct. It is a massive liability. One I am stupidly still considering.

Re: Big boat haul out

We're Yanks you live in Nova Scotia for half of each year. Shelburne is a lovely town and is on your way if your bringing the boat down the Atlantic coast. You should be able to get any supplies you need up in Halifax.

However, be advised of the local HST, which is a sales tax of about 15% on most items and services. It adds up.

There may be other haul out options in Halifax, but Shelburne may be cheaper.

Best of luck.

Needless to say, it was a huge expense and one they had little chance of getting their money back due to the owner being broke. The yard actually stopped taking big privately owned boats for a while until they had a system worked out where they would not get caught again.

A 800 ton steel boat has over $100k in scrap value.

How much is insurance on something like that? Liability even?

Re: Big boat haul out

If 15k for a haulout sounds expensive, I suggest reconsidering buying a 120' 400 ton steel boat.

Check the big cities on the lakes too. Chicago, Detroit, Green Bay all have some pretty big yards.

Might make sense to get in Chicago area as travel to and from TX will be relatively easy.

Re: Big boat haul out

Sounds to me like you really need to consider a long term plan when it comes to ownership costs and enjoying your vessel.

A $15k haul out including scraping and painting isn't even the tip of the iceberg.

How much is it going to cost to replace some hull plates? What about regalvanizing the chain and anchor? New set of sails? All new rigging?

When it comes to keeping the cost of big boat ownership to a minimum I think you have to look far away from the USA and high labor rates to places like Phuket Thailand.

Some even consider Phuket expensive which is why many haul out in Satun Thailand.

In between haul outs, you can base the boat in a place like Langkawi for a fraction of the cost of basing it anywhere in the USA.

Re: Big boat haul out

Thomas 1985 I am not sure a 100k scrap value would be enough to cover the costs of removing her. There is plenty of material that can't be recycled and will have to be dumped. Then there are items like the diesel and oil that will have to be paid to get rid of. Hopefully there is no asbestos onboard, here in Australia that is big dollars to remove and dispose of. Then you have to pay to have all that scrap steel cut into truck size pieces to be removed. Whatever yard you cut the boat up will expect the site to be left pristine. You are going to need a crane to move those steel pieces on to the truck as well. 100k is not going to go far. Then you have to find a yard that will let you cut up a boat.
The yacht in the truck below gave the scrap steel to the metal recycle yard in return for trucking it away for free. The closest metal recycle yard was over two hours drive away.

Cheers

Re: Big boat haul out

As someone else mentioned, a commercial yard would have the capability.

In Newport News, VA there is a yard that supports the local commercial fishing fleet called Fairleads.

Attached is a link to there website:

Re: Big boat haul out

Fore and Aft, you are spot on it’s not all profit, but $50-100k offsets a lot of labor.

Scrap yards will also take whole vehicles and deal with everything to get the processed steel value. I just took an old pickup with failed tranny in and got like $600.

I’d, cut the boat in about 5 semi truck haulable pieces and drop off at nearest scrap yard. They would pay you for it.
