Re: Bilge Pump Running But Not Pumping

Any thoughts on what the best diaphragm pump would be for this application?

We've been using one of these for the last 9 years with 0 problems (the float switch is another story).

Diaphragm pumps are generally much more expensive and have much more limited capacity for their size, so choose one with extra capacity.

This is what I use.

I use the small one for maintenance and have a big centrifugal mounted high for "emergency" dewatering.

I've got a similar set up with a Rule 2000 5 year pump & a See Water pump switch.

Re: Bilge Pump Running But Not Pumping

Here's an update. I removed the pump, made sure it was clean it & re-installed it facing towards the bow so that the pump body would not block the flow of water. I also re-ran the hose so that there are no low spots. None of this fixed the problem. It still runs without pumping. I then unhooked the power to it & filled the bilge till the pump was under water. When I reconnected the power it pumped great. I went to the Whale website I it turns out they now recommend that these pumps be installed at an angle with the water sensor higher than the pickup. In fact they now have a wedge attachment for the optimum angle. So I changed the angle of the pump & it appears to have fixed the problem.
