I hadn’t seen that, no. I hadn’t even heard of the brand TBH. I had a quick Google and from what I see I assume the brand has been discontinued?

But I do already have the sheaves for the job and they look remarkably similar.

It’s the mounts for the sheaves that had defeated me.

Matt, given that you already have the sheaves I think I would mock up the mounts using ordinary steel and find a good fabricator that can reproduce them in heavy stainless, custom mounts for a custom refurb.

Close enough. I’ll weld them up myself though because I can make each mount up exactly to size and shape in less time than it would take to draw/mock it all up for a fabricator. One of the many reasons I have a TIG on the boat. (Though a mate of mine who is a professional boiler maker keeps telling me to do the stainless welding in stick mode, so I might just try that out with the first one.)

I just wanted something I could buy off the shelf though. It seems what I want is not made anywhere.

GILow, not trying to be funny, but adding your time of previous efforts, plus another 3 days of this thread, and I'll bet you could have had a hydraulic system already installed and operational.

Yes, but then I would have needed another five days to rip it out and throw it in the bin.

Re: Blocks/sheaves for cable steering.

It sounds like we aren't the solution due to time constraints in this case, but our sheaves are indeed ideal for use with dyneema steering cables. If you're reusing sheaves that have already been used with wire cable, we recommend cleaning up the sheave channels to remove burrs and give a completely smooth surface for the dyneema to run on. https://edsonmarine.com/blog/replaci...-with-dyneema/

I bought new sheaves, the old ones were too small.

I was surprised you didn’t have double sheave blocks visible on your web site. Are they something you sell?

Re: Blocks/sheaves for cable steering.

Just a follow up to anyone who read this far…

The Admiral pulled off a brilliant move. She reminded me of an industrial place we’d visited three years ago, buying, of all things, tubes for the tyres on her sack truck. She reckoned she’d seen something there that might do. (She has something like a photographic memory.)

So we dropped in on the way home from the holiday rental and, lo and behold, stainless steel fixed caster mounts for the princely sum of AU$20 each. Rated to some insane weight (1500kg) and 50% thicker stainless than the original blocks. Probably only 304, not sure about that bit.

It was about twenty minutes work to weld a crossbar on each (to stop them squeezing inwards under load and to trap the lines where the lines go over the block) and drill holes for the shaft closer to the base to reduce the leverage.

So, $25 each for the stainless steel bushed sheaves, $20 for the block, $12 for the half inch bolt, nylock nut and washers, about $1 worth of welding rod. AU$88 each. Nice. And I’m sure not going to lay awake wondering if they are strong enough.
