Re: Bonding of bowthruster Vetus?

Thanks for all info, clear as day [emoji106]. Hope to have answer from Vetus @ NZ as well. Sounds like bonding is the way to go. Jonas

Yup, per ABYC, the battery positive (red) is connected to the “ungrounded” conductor, the battery negative (black, and most recently yellow) is connected to the “grounded” conductor, and the battery negative is also connected to the “grounding” (green or green with yellow stripe) conductor. The grounding conductor should be connected to the AC grounding conductor, the catholic boat bonding system, the lightning protection system ground, and the RF ground. Only the DC “grounded”‘conductor is normally current carrying.

Most MacGiver’s screw this up royally. The next thing you know, the feathering prop is half eaten away due to galvanic corrosion or electrolysis.

Base rule of ABYC standards, always follow the manufacturers instructions, (they carry the most liability insurance.)

Re: Bonding of bowthruster Vetus?

Got an answer from Vetus:

”Essentially all electrical components of a VETUS Bow Thruster are fully isolated and the Bow Thruster Tailpiece has its own anode, so there is no need to bond the thruster. If the vessel is an aluminium or steel hull the thruster has to be isolated which is also covered in the manuals. ”
