Bottom paint question

I just cleaned my CSC ablative bottom paint and discovered an area ( 8”by 1”) where the paint flaked off exposing the epoxy barrier coat. I just hauled and painted last November. Will it hurt the epoxy barrier coat of barnicals get on it?
Thanks, Warren

Re: Bottom paint question

You could rub some lanolin on that area

Re: Bottom paint question

Its just the start. The rest will start flaking soon if not already, most likely too many layers. It needs some back breaking labor to take it down and be re-done. I would rough up with sandpaper, apply a couple layers of CSC to the area and go sailing this season. Deal with it at the end of the season as it will be a couple weeks of sanding and painting. I wouldn't leave it totally unprotected though.

Re: Bottom paint question

The barrier coat will be just fine. Enjoy the season. You'll get a few growth patches, no big deal.

How many coats since it was last stripped? But even quite a few is not always reason to panic. When the boat is blasted at the end of the season you'll get a good look and can plan from there. Often some limited scraping and sanding will do the trick if you're not a racer. It just depends on what you see.

But I certainly would not interrupt the season for it.

PS. You really want to take it easy cleaning an ablative paint. It will wear through.

Re: Bottom paint question

Thanks for the replies. I think there are 4 coats on there now. I had just sanded and applied 2 coats 6 months ago. I will try the lanolin idea for a temporary fix. Guess I’ll have to pay to sandblast down to barrier coat next haulout. I was also thinking of grounding at high tide and repainting that area after sanding. It is only about a foot below the waterline just aft of the bow.
