Broken whisker padeye

I broke the plastic padeye on my boat.
I want to replace with stainless from west marine. The new one is bigger than the broken one.

Should i take it back?

If i use it how do i mount it, so it is stronger than the broken one?

Re: Broken whisker padeye

Hi Tom, I would take it back and look for one like this with the correct center to center distance on the mounting holes:
https://www.defender.com/product.jsp?id=116786
Defender says they are out but they list all the spec's.

Or if you know someone in the trades make a deal to have one made.

The eye in that one looks way too small to be mated with the end of a whisker pole or spinnaker pole.

Jim

So, are you really saying that the end (of the whisker pole) justifies the mean (average size size of the padeye) ?

Tom. I hope you find something that works. I would not vote plastic for that application.

Re: Broken whisker padeye

You could use the one you've got, but it's going to be a challenge. Making it fit the curve of the mast wll require more than a stout hammer, because beating it into shape could damage the weld. Instead, you would need to clamp one side in a vise and heat the other side to about 900 degrees F, or visibly glowing red in soft light, and then bend that side to the right curve, probably with an adjustable wrench. You'll need an oxy-acetylene torch to do that - propane won't give you enough heat.

The ring you've got was designed for a larger boat. The plastic one - well, Spot spoke with wisdom.
