Bronze Thru-Hull and Antifoul

Is it OK to paint a Bronze thru-hull with a copper based anti-foul?

Going from the layers of anti-foul on them (i know for sure the last owner used a copper based one) I presume its OK?

Yes it's ok. You should wire brush them if there is a lot of old paint that restricts flow.

Sherpa is right, but follow up the wire brush with a little coarse sandpaper, because a wire brush can leave too slick a surface for good paint adhesion.

Re: Bronze Thru-Hull and Antifoul

We have had success coating our bronze thru-hulls with PropPurr. It does not build up and does not constrict flow since it is a very thin coating. However, it is only good for seasonal use. PropPurr seems to work better on various types of bronzes. For example, our bronze strainer when coated with PropPurr never gets any growth, performing even better than when we coat our bronze prop.

But...if you use a hi-copper content antifoul make sure your hull zincs (if you have a bonding system installed) are NOT touching/connected to the antifoul paint. Don't ask me how I know!

Re: Bronze Thru-Hull and Antifoul

If using copper antifoul paint it is safest to prime the thruhull, second coat with hard paint like Pettit Unepoxy 2 times, then paint on your antifoul paint.
