Bulkhead issues

I was looking at a 35 foot sailboat today fromm 1979 And I'm thinking about buying it, the only thing holding me back is the bulkhead. It has wooden post at the bulkhead area, it seems fine but the lower part of the bulkhead looks kind of bad . Any opinions? How much to fix it?

Interior gelcoat or whatever the other layer is called was also cracked or delaminated in almost every storage space that I opened. Is this normal? I have only viewed two boats and I would prefer not to view more 😂

Re: Bulkhead issues

Anything is fixable, but if you purchased this boat I think you would have substantial structural repairs.

Whatever boat you choose is likely to need some work, but the time spent choosing the best boat will pay substantial dividends.

Viewing only two boats is just scratching the surface.

Good luck and try to enjoy the buying process. The right boat is out there somewhere.

Re: Bulkhead issues

The second set of pics clearly shows the tabbing material that joins various inner parts to the hull is popping off. A fix requires more invasive disassembly and grinding than the boat is worth.

Go look at some more boats....

Re: Bulkhead issues

Hello, sailingbluew, here's a link to something to read before you go look at more boats: https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums...1-a-78671.html

The guy who wrote it is a very experienced surveyor for boats. Whatever caused it, structural motion has occurred to that boat, and after they tried painting to make it look better, too. As noelex77 wrote, above, most things CAN be fixed. But that boat has a number of structural problems, and if you don't have the skills to repair it yourself, you ARE looking as way, way more than it is worth. I wouldn't take it free, but I'm really conservative.
