Butyl Tape?

I have some leaky portholes. I've read butyl tape is an ideal bedding for those.

Is all butyl tape basically the same?
Can I use this $5 roll from Home Depot?

Or do I need something else?

What Knotical posted!!! The Bed-it-Brand is the one to use.

Re: Butyl Tape?

Buy or examine in a ship's store one roll of Bed It tape. Note price. Examine other butyl tape for similar thickness, squishiness, etc. Recognize that the same stuff may be on the market without the very expensive "marine" label.

Re: Butyl Tape?

I am not someplace close to a ships store where I can fondle butyl tape.

I am getting ready to replace 10 opening port holes in a steel boat. vetus aluminum units. Vetus documentation is mute on the topic, the drawing simply has an arrow and says “sealant.” Not real helpful.

I have bought LIFE SAFE butyl tape on a roll from Defender Marine.

Is this OK to use or is there something else? What is the difference?

I also bought some butyl caulk for a standard caulk gun. Not sure how I would use that, but I have it as a back up. It is the recommended sealant to use on RV skylights. Maybe smear it around inside the joint as a backup.

Re: Butyl Tape?

The defender tape is fine. I wouldn’t use the caulk.

Re: Butyl Tape?

Are you in Canada? Any RV store has butyl tape you can fondle. If in the States, Ace Hardware stocks it too.

I’ve found literally any butyl tape works. Just has to be soft and sticky. Doesn’t matter too much where you get it.

Edit: I see your location from the Home Depot store screenshot. If there’s an Ace nearby, you could get it there. They have nice, wide, sticky and thick butyl tape.

My guess is this one is walkable. I used to go to this one all the time. They are a little smaller, so I’d call ahead to make sure they have it in stock.

Re: Butyl Tape?

That butyl tape posted by the OP looks just like the stuff I got at a much higher price years ago from C*mp@$$ Marine. Exactly, even the paper it is stuck to. Just be sure to keep it in a cold place and get it off the tape before it gets uncontrollably sticky. And if you want a real mess use the caulk.
