Re: Buying a boat after a grounding

Fundamental questions that would need to be answered --

1. Who did the repair,
2. What is their reputation,
3. What is the warranty on the repair.

period!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We had a contract to fix keel damage to early Beneteaus. After running aground the inner liner would separate and the fin keel aft end gets pushed into the hull separating whatever little reinforcement frame they had fitted.

Problem is GRP becomes flaky around the impact zone after a hard knock.
If the hull has a core its even more of a problem.
All this doesn't necessarily mean the repair has not been done right.
Unless they told you you most likely wouldn't even know of the grounding.
Would I buy it? If the vessel prices fairly and after having had a good look at it I would consider it.

Re: Buying a boat after a grounding

Have you checked out 'Expedition Evans' YT channel? They did precisely this - bought a boat that had had a severe grounding and had a delaminated 'grid'.
They found it was poorly built in the first place, and they 'over-killed' it with multiple layers of epoxy glass to re-tab.
Took them MONTHS.
Subsequent survey and surveyor reckons they went overboard and it is now way above 'spec'.
They took advice from the Beneteau factory as to how to repair the damage.
It was WEEKS and WEEKS of grinding and fibreglassing.
I don't recall if they got the boat for a song, but ISTR it was less than US$50K, and they've probably put $30K into it, and it's probably now worth much the same as yours $150-200K.
But their (my est) $30K could easily be $80K from a yard.
And what was revealing was that there was 'some evidence' of previous 'yard work repairs' probably dating to when the incident first occurred, that were sub-standard.
Might be worth have a look at some of their vids to see what is involved in "doing the job properly" so you have a better idea as to whether or not his has been done on your boat.
