can this seacock be saved?

I recently bought a willcox and crittenden seacock at a swap meet--after cleaning it up and lapping ( possibly too much), it seems as if the tapered cone protrudes past the end of the seacocks body making it impossible to tighten the nut enough to draw up the taper.
I'm not too worried about possibly over lapping it figuring that if a few too many turns wore it beyond usefullness I'm glad I didn't install the thing.

My question-does anyone have any ideas on fixing this? Machine down the taper end? Or the retaing washer? Just wondering--thanks
