Re: Canvas Sewing Machine Questions...

Again the issue isn’t the ability to punch through materials. Even cheap machines can sow acrylic canvas. The issue is they can’t feed the material reliably.

The 99 is the 3/4 version of the 66. Same machine, just a tad smaller.

Has the Yamata Family Sew Portable Walking Foot Zig Zag Long Arm 388 ? It looks similar to the LZ-1 for $410.

I guess we'll have to see.

Re: Canvas Sewing Machine Questions...

Hey folks, getting ready to buy a machine. the sailrite has the 7" throat, other brands have a 9" throat.

while I do not envision ever making sails, if I need to ever repair, one is that extra 2" of threat depth a desirable trait to have...

my first project is going to be doger and bimini just thinkig about trying to get the plastic windows rolled up ...

thoughts...

Yes it is, if you have the space for it.

I don't plan on being a live-aboard any time soon, so it would be table mounted home machine.

Maybe I make a base for it so I can use it at a picnic table at the marina in a pinch...

Re: Canvas Sewing Machine Questions...

The OLD Sailrite (80s/90s) did have 9 inches! It was the main reason I did not end up with the current Sailrite when I purchased in 2016. I went with the the Singer Stylist S18. I love it. It's just as capable on many thicknesses of canvas as it is on lightweight swimsuit knits! It's versatile (but it's heavy)

The 7" throat can be made to work when constructing new projects if you plan how to work your way across one side to the other. However, the 7" throat can make repair projects - even for dodgers and biminis - a huge headache. If you plan to have a table-mounted machine at home, I'd get one with as much throat as you can and definitely a walking foot.

Re: Canvas Sewing Machine Questions...

Doesn't appear to have a motor or walking foot.

Just stick with the $450 (including shipping) yamata/family sew from zamir.net.

I was going to get one, but found a "used" -though never unpacked- one on fleabay for less.

Just finished 20 or 30 bobbinsworth of diamond stitched upholstry on my T-Bucket, the sewing machine runs like a champ.

Bill, thanks for the report. I can almost smell the Naugahyde from here...
Is this the one? https://zamirsew.net/family-sew-port...-long-arm-388/

Re: Canvas Sewing Machine Questions...

Got my alibaba special last week. Lubed it all up and have been messing around with it some on scraps. The silkscreened numbers and letter are in the wrong spots, hence the red sharpie marks. The owners manual, thankfully is in English, but woefully inadequate. It does have a nice exploded parts diagram. The sailrite how to videos have come in handy

Sprung for the monster wheel as well

First project might be recover of the cockpit cushions, simple rectangle shapes before I jump into a Bimini and dodger after I practice more..

Re: Canvas Sewing Machine Questions...

Congrats on your new sewing machine. From the right hand piece of fabric, it looks sort of like it is just occasionally dropping stitches when you turn corners. The tension may need adjusting. Otherwise, have at those cockpit cushion covers Will you use zippers or velcro? [I prefer zips, going 80% of the way around 3 sides, for ease of putting cover back on after washing. But in their absence, have actually sewn the last side closed, and that also works.]

Re: Canvas Sewing Machine Questions...

ann,

when I made my turn I left the needle down lifted the foot and rotated the material around the needle and then dropped the foot.

I was just messing around with some leftover material I had from my interior cushion project. my interior cushions I did not use zip or velcro did a blind stitch which I'll likely do again on the cockpit.

my current cockpit cushions are closed cell with some sort of bonded vinyl coating. and that coating is starting to peel away on the corners. My plan was to make covers out of a textilene type material, which, in theory, should reduce the need to remove the covers... pic of the cushions before cleaning after I bought the boat.
