Cape Dory Deck Step Composition (is there wood core?)

I have a Cape Dory 27, which has a deck stepped mast with no compression post. Rather, there is a steel substructure within the deck core, which distributes the load to the bulkhead.

Does anyone know if there is also wood within the core underneath the mast, or is it only steel and fiberglass?

Don't know, but you could drill into the area with a small bit and see what comes out. Refill with epoxy.
