capping solar vent/fan

I have 2 solar fans that do not work and are pretty ugly. One of them leaks badly and I would like to find a simple way to cap it until I decide if I want to get a new fan or just fill the hole. Any advice on capping?

Old plastic lid, butyl tape, wood, screws...even better if 'lid' is sturdy plastic or fiberglass sheet. Three or four or five or six screws close to the edge of the hole in a circle pattern.

Re: capping solar vent/fan

I've mounted an 8 inch inspection port directly under the solar vent.

When the decks are awash I needn't venture out on deck to try to seal the hole. (I also have smaller inspection ports under each Dorade Vent)

I like this idea. I never thought of using them upside down so to speak.

Re: capping solar vent/fan

If you find one big enough couldnt you just mount this topsides right-side up with the tape/sealant/screws?

Two days ago I installed one in the aft cabin of the yacht I am building. I have a new (to me) camera so I'll see if I can get a photo. ......just a moment. Yep! Looks as though it worked.
