Maybe look at it from a risk analysis point of view:
- How much cost/effort to just paint it and potentially grind down some areas that crack in the future and repaint those areas.
vs
- How much effort to completely remove it all and re-fair it before painting.

I'm assuming we are looking at cosmetic fairing where any cracks would be harmless if addressed in a reasonable time frame.

True Valhalla, although I was just updating the thread to let the contributes know the result. Although we are now a year later getting the boat finished I am glad to have piece of mind that it's all been done right and it should all hold up now for years to come
