Silver solder in the end I took it to a reputable welder who convinced me that was the way to go.

If prepared well and good bond, should be ok. With 180 degree contact turn, alignment, correct tension and proper lubrication should be good. You might want to inspect annually just to monitor wear. Nothing should be binding or wheel hard to turn. Don't forget to lubricate the push pull cable inside the sheath and look for loosness at the cable end anchor points.

Sounds like a good plan, cable is lubed and tensioned it is picking up and releasing the chain as expected. I took a vid and was going to post but it seems only pics can be uploaded.
