Wheels, you can buy paint by the liter?!

In the States, it is usually by the pint (half-liter) or the gallon, with anything in between rarely stocked even if it is available. And the gallon often costs about the same thing that two quarts (half gallon) would cost when they are available.

(Which suggests to me that the paint is worth about the same thing as water, and all the rest is just a "transaction fee" for the item, regardless of the item's size and weight.)

Ooooo yeah. Don't get me started on paint mark up in NZ. Some mark ups to retail can be in the 100-200%. Massive discounts 10-20-40% can be advertised to the consumer and they lap it up thinking thye are getting a great deal. Then there several layers of trade discounts. These can be from 40-60% and then you have the proffesional high volume trade discounts of 60-80% and then you have the retailers/stockists discounts of upto 100%.
Yes we have 250ml, 500ml, 1ltr, 4ltr, 10ltr and sometimes 20ltr.
250ml is almost the price of 500ml, 500ml is almost the price of 1ltr and 1ltr is almost the price of 4ltr. So the most economical way of buying for most of us is 4ltr. A 1ltr maybe say $50 and a 4 maybe $89. for instance.

This is good paint. I sprayed my whole boat with it. works fine.

I am an industrial and commercial painter. I work for a big company in michigan. You have to be very careful when cutting corners with paint. but pitthane is a good product and it will work fine on your dinghy.

You will have to prime it first, XIM primer works good for fiberglass.

I have known a paint chemist for Dulux for many years. He insists that the cost of manufacture, packaging and delivery to warehouses is 10% of the retail price. I used to get enourmous discounts but alass he has now left them and retired, most inconsiderate hey.

That maybe true in your neck of the woods, but it ain't here. Here is an actual experiance for me. I went to a retail store in Blenheim that I am supposedly getting 30% off retail from. I bought a 1 ltr pack of two pot top coat. RRP was $120'ish. I paid $80'ish for it. I was in Picton a week later and asked for a price from my friend the chandler. He gave me his normal selling price which was $50. I woudl ahve bought it for even less if I needed another. My reply was "WHAT!?!?". His reply was "no one sells retail anymore" Well he was slightly wrong obviousely, but in Pictoon, there is too much compettion in the marine paint market and the prices are way cheaper.

Wheels, I've got a distinct memory (could be false but it is distinct) that we picked up a gallon of West's Own bottom paint in a hurry last year for $75? And it is on "launch" sale now for $160.

Tires, mattresses, bottom paint...these are the mysteries of life?

Unbusted,
Yeah ... listen to Chad & myself, Damn fine paint, expect a 10 year life expectancy here in S. Florida, much longer the further north you are ... and you should have half a gallon left!
