Cleaning Clears

Just got new clears and wondering if anything new has come out in the last few years and is really good for preserving and cleaning them. Avaible in Australia as well.

Re: Cleaning Clears

We have used Starbrite step 1 and step 2 with good results.

Yeah I know how to Google, but was looking for recommendations, rather than a lucky dip.

Re: Cleaning Clears

We choose to use the Imar products on our Strataglas side and rear curtains of our full cockpit enclosure, and on the Makrolon forward facing windshield with excellent results.

Here is a Practical Sailor article [last updated in 2020] testing and ranking several products.

Cheers, Bill

Thank you for providing clarification and transparency of the subject of the post.

Still not sure why would want to clean that which is clear.

Re: Cleaning Clears

Plain dish soap and water. First rinse with water from a hose, then wash with soft sponge and soapy water, then rinse again with fresh, inside and out. Towel dry with soft terry towel.

Or, a friend of ours has always used Mr. Sheen spray and a soft cloth.

If you don't want to use the hose, we've been using Novus #1 Plastic clean & shine. We've also used Meguair's cleaner, followed by the polish. You can find them in auto parts stores, for use on lexan headlamp covers. The polish removes minute scratches, which cause "hazing".

Ann

PS. If you are most marinas in the developed world, you'll still be getting tiny drops of jet fuel, diesel exhaust, brake dust and dirt dust inside and out on your "clears", as well as salt ocean spray when you sail. Pray for rain.

Re: Cleaning Clears

Depending on the brand of window vinyl you have, IMAR is the only brand of cleaners that Strataglass accepts without voiding your warranty.
