cleaning stainless steel standing rigging

im looking for tips on cleaning the stains from my standing rigging. At the moment all my shrouds are off and coiled up so what would be ideal would be to mix up some sort of solution in a small plastic kiddie pool and soak everything until clean, then soak to rinse as many times as necessary. What i don't know is what product to use, any suggestions would be appreciated.

Steve.

Citric acid works well and won't damage the metal. As neilpride said, it will clean and passivate the surface. Rinse well with fresh water after a 15 to 30 minute soak. Rinse and repeat if necessary. Whatever you do, DO NOT use sulfuric or hydrochloric (muriatic) acid.
