Re: Clear vs Tinted hatches.

interesting. I wouldn't have thought of that. I was considering the possibility of making clear hatches and cutting tinted inserts from thinner plexi to place under the clear. that might end up doing the same thing you describe.

Re: Clear vs Tinted hatches.

Our boat has smoky tint hatch covers. I made a hatch cover for the mid hatch, with heavy breeze-way for the cover, and sunbrella for the surround, to cut down on the the UV getting into the saloon. It IS cooler than it was without the cover. I also made a hatch dodger for the forehatch, so that the hatch can be left open when it is raining. This, I made from Stamoid, a pvc fabric, and it makes it quite dark up there. So the forepeak can be made dark for daytime sleeping (which we do on trips).

So, everyone's needs and uses varies. I'd say if you want to try clear perspex, give it a go. I do prefer clear for opening ports, and made translucent panels for privacy at docks. I "cheated": they're just white printer paper, but people can't see in, and light comes through.

Ann

PS. It's plenty light below in the daytime, no trouble to read or sew.
