Thanks Sandy and Dave. Good point re COG. Would it be close, however, if I did it (of course while motoring, which I avoid whenever possible) in a no current/no wind situation? I'm on the Great Lakes so we don't have tidal issues like you ocean dudes/dudettes and rarely much of a current (with notable exceptions; ie Little Current which is occasionally, anything but little)

when i run my motor i transport to the bermuda triangle, my compass just spins wildly. the funny part is its a diesel

Diesels make magnetism just fine! I'm guessing your compass is on your binnacle and the engine is directly under it.
