Hang a piece of copper pipe overboard if you don’t believe me.
The “stuff” in bottom paint isn’t metallic copper, it’s cupric oxide or other chemical, I’m not sure which, it’s copper based, but it’s not copper.
Ships of old used copper sheeting to protect the wood from toredo worms I believe

What about tin? I was under the impression that anti-foul paints a while ago used tin in them, which is now outlawed. Would a sheet of tin work or is the concept similar to that you described?

Tin - no.
Tributyltin oxide - yes

Re: Copper sheet for the dinghy

There is a paint product that IS real copper and has an extended life out of water ..it is not a conventional and fouling ! I have had it on the bottom of a sail boat in Florida for 8 years and no growth!!! It's called copper Cote! You would have to Google it to find out particulars!

Re: Copper sheet for the dinghy

SV Delos tried a slippery paint the last time they did their bottom. I didn't catch what it was. They also added some type of ultrasonic vibrator to their hull. Anyone know how that worked out for them?

You'd be rich if you came up with the perfect coating.

In my experience, Coppercoat is an extremely ineffective anti fouling coating and honestly, I don't believe a claim like this.

I would normally trust your memory over mine so let's see what google says.

Oh look, one entry says TBTF and another says TBTO. That settles it, we both have great memories

Tributyltin fluoride (TBTF). CAS No. 1983-10-4). Adverse Effects. Fluoride Action Network Pesticide Project.

Re: Copper sheet for the dinghy

Don't know what experience that has been shown to anyone else BUTif you are looking for a less expensive alternative to sheet copper ... look at copper Cote advertisment and judge for yourself! Much less $$$ than sheet copper, easy to apply and long-lasting! Oh yes, approved by DEP as environmentally friendly!

Re: Copper sheet for the dinghy

We got tired of cleaning the dinghy bottom. I made a lifting 3-point bridle we use to lift the dink every night with the spinnaker halyard. It’s easy and the growth has ended.

And it reduces the likelihood of theft as an added bonus!
