Re: Cordless Heat Gun To Remove Varnish

Maybe you need a small Honda generator to provide power for a heat gun. I have been using a Warner heat gun where you can dial in the temperature. I use about a 600 - 700 F range for varnish. I also use a sharp 1-inch chisel to scrape the softened finish. Key is to find a temperature that does not char the wood. I you use a typical heat gun it is too hot, and charring is very easy if you hesitate on the movement the cool temperature solves or reduces the chance of charring. My experiences is scrapping and then sanding with a 120 180 to 240 grit. It's a slow process, square inch by square inch. Key is to have a sharp chisel. As pointed out earlier a battery power gun would not work. S dustless sander would help keep the quanity of dust down (sander hooked to vacuum cleaner)
