Re: Could use a little advice. Aluminum or Fiberglass for this?

Reading all the posts, I still like the hollow foam-and-glass pyramid with heavy flanges best. If I had all the materials, I could make it in two days. Fairing and finishing would take longer, but it'd be far faster than waiting for welders.

I like this. But I don’t have a good laminate schedule for it.

If speed is of the essence, it might be time for some good ole seat-of-the-pants engineering--the only kind I ever do--remembering the adage that "nothing too strong ever broke." Might come out heavier than you like, but if it gets you on the water until you can 1: figure out if you like the pyramid, and have a lighter one engineered and maybe built from carbon/epoxy or 2: find a welder who can extend the mast, and have everything ready for the modification after you're sailed the boat a little (surely there will be other issues to tweak--I'm still tweaking my home build thirteen years later).

I think people would feel better if you raised the deck and put the extension inside the raised deck
Tada it would look like normal
Something about the base of the mast not sitting on the deck itself

Why would the base of the mast go all floppy strongly bolted on the riser when they usually just sit on a mast step with nothing securing them in place or am I missing something
