Curved wood

I am (slowly} rebuilding a 1978 Paceship 23K. Rather than replacing the plastic banding used to face the plywood I would prefer to use wood.
I am not sure what method is used by boat builder to make the curved pieces that transition from the horizontal to vertical surfaces.
I do not thick steam bending would work so assume the pieces are cut out.
Thanks
Bruce

You can tell by checking if it is a separate piece. I have both kinds aboard.

Re: Curved wood

Hi Bruce, could you give us a picture of what you are working on please? I am not seeing many curves on those (looking at online pics, hope I got the right model) except for maybe the corners of the nav table and such...?

You are correct about steam bending, nobody does it for interior trim. For one thing most of the woods used for interior trim in boats, like teak or mahogany don't steam bend well. Oak or ash, yes.

Most trim is built of cut curves matched to straight lengths. Or the curves are laminated from multiple thin layers glued together. For a one off design or just one boat the first option is usually faster, unless all curves are identical radi, or you are building many identical boats and can use laminating jigs to knock out a bunch of laminated trim.

Re: Curved wood

Thanks for the information. I guess my last reply did not go through.
I did attempt to attach a couple photos but no luck.
